When Pharmaceuticals and Medical Products Cause Serious Harm
In the United States, most people expect that the products we use are generally safe — that medicines have been properly tested and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before they ever reach the consumer. They trust their doctors to prescribe these medications and they take them because they want to protect their health.
So, it can be especially devastating when people are injured by medicines and medical products they thought were safe. At the Las Vegas law firm of Eglet Wall, we represent people whose lives have been permanently changed by defective drugs. As forceful advocates for injured consumers, we take action in Nevada courts.
Our attorneys handle litigation related to many different types of defective pharmaceuticals and medical products:
- Accutane, a controversial acne medication linked to suicides
- Arava, a drug used for treating rheumatoid arthritis
- Baycol, a cholesterol drug linked to instances of fatal rhabdomyolysis
- Bextra, an arthritic drug and pain reliever linked to gastrointestinal damage
- Botox, an injectable drug used as a "wrinkle reducer"
- Celebrex, an arthritis medication
- Meridia, a weight loss drug
- NuvaRing and Norplant, medical devices used for birth control
- Propofol, a sedative
- Rezulin, a diabetes drug associated with liver damage
- Serzone, an antidepressant
- Vioxx, an arthritis drug linked to cardiovascular problems
- Yaz birth control, which has been linked to gallbladder disease
- Zyprexa, a drug used to treat schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder
The manufacturer of the powerful sedative Propofol issued a recall when it was discovered that some lots contained particulate matter that entered the drug from stainless steel equipment used during the manufacturing process. The particulate matter could potentially cause life-threatening personal injury, including stroke, respiratory failure, heart attack and wrongful death. A $500 Million Verdict: Taking Action to Correct a Serious Wrong
Our law firm has won some of the largest judgments in the country, including an unprecedented $500 million verdict in a civil trial related to a 2008 hepatitis outbreak at three now-defunct endoscopy clinics.
The outbreak was caused by unsafe injection practices related to the administration of anesthesia medication, which exposed patients to the blood of other patients. Cutting corners, the Endoscopy Center of Nevada and other clinics put patients at risk by reusing single dose vials of medication — even though this practice is widely known to pass infection. The vials had become infected through their initial use. When used again, they infected otherwise disease-free patients with life-changing illnesses such as hepatitis C, hepatitis B and HIV.
When patients from the clinics turned to us, we knew that the harm they had experienced was serious. That's why we took forceful action on their behalf. We tailored our legal strategies to get results for them in Nevada courts, and that's just what happened.
In this first case, our trial team brought a personal injury victim's story to the jury. And the jury heard what we had to say, loud and clear. But this $500 million verdict is just a start for us. In the near future, we will continue to bring other victims' stories before juries as well. Our plan is to continue speaking on behalf of all endoscopy injury victims until everyone has received the compensation they deserve.
